Ay up me owd flower! "A" team get mugged in Dingleland
On the men's "A" team first ever visit to Barnsley Tennis Club in Dingleland they suffered what appeared to be a comprehensive 7-2 defeat but, in reality, they got mugged in a very tight affair with 6 of the 9 rubbers going down to champions tie-breaks - with Ridgeway losing all six! In fact Ridgeway won more sets then their opponents but couldn't find the cutting edge to win the tie-breaks. In the first round Mick Mason and Liam Rudge lost to the firsts on a tie-break after sets of 6-2, 4-6 as did Martyn Soar and James Haigh after sets of 6-4, 0-6. Glyn Rudge and Nick Johnson lost to the seconds by 6-1, 6-0. The second round was a repeat with Glyn and Nick losing to the firsts on a tie-break after sets of 0-6, 6-4 and Martyn and James losing to the seconds on a tie-break after sets of 6-2, 6-7. Mick and Liam got Ridgeway's first rubber by beating the thirds by 6-3, 7-5. At 5-1 down the match was lost but Ridgeway fought hard and Martyn and James beat the firsts in straight sets by 7-6, 6-2 to get the second rubber. Mick and Liam lost to the seconds after a controversial tie-break after sets of 2-6. 7-6. At least two dubious calls from the Barnsley players were key factors in the result. Glyn and Nick lost to the thirds in the almost inevitable tie-break after sets of 5-7. 6-3.
Final match score: Rubbers 2-7, Sets 10-8, Games 79-95.
