Club enjoys its annual Finals Day
The Club's Finals Day provided some good tennis played by a complete cross section of the club's membership. On a fine if blustery day new and old members together with young and old(ish) members provided some exciting finals and good spectating for those not taking part. Even if anyone got bored there were plenty of good refreshments to tuck into.
Firstly, the new members - Melanie Pencik featured in the Ladies Singles, Ladies Double and the Mixed Doubles. She was victorious in two of them. Lias Boag featured in the Ladies Singles and Ladies Doubles. Mandy Jones was in the Ladies Doubles.
Young members - Liam Rudge was in the Men's Singles, Mark Firth was in the Mixed Doubles final as was Chrissie Majchzak.
The old(ish) members were represented by Chris Dacey in the Ladies Doubles, Mick Mason in the Men's and Mixed Doubles and Chris Parsons in the Men's Doubles.
The other members to feature in the finals were Mark Lord and Nick Johnson who don't really fit any of the above categories.
The day started off with the two singles matches. Melanie Pencik beat Lisa Boag in straight sets and Liam Rudge beat Nick Johnson, also in two straight sets. At 3-1 up in the second Nick looked like he might take the match the distance but Liam came back strongly to keep his title.
Then came the Men's and Ladies doubles. Liam was back on court partnering Chris Parsons who was making his first final appearance against Mark Lord and Mick Mason. Liam and Chris came out on top to win 6-3, 6-4. The lLadoes Doubles was won by Melanie Pencik and Chris Dacey, beating Lisa Boag and Mandy Jones in three sets. A really close match hers decided by 8-6 in that all important third set.
The last final was the Mixed Doubles and it was Mick Mason and Chrissie Majchrzak, making her first finals day appearance, who beat Melanie Pencik and Mark Firth, also in his first final, by 6-2, 6-4.
Chairman Mick Mason passed a vote of thanks to Wendy Roberston and all the ladies who had helped prepare the excellent refreshments.
Congratulations to all those members who took part throughout the tournament and for the losers there is always next year.
Trophies will be presented to winners and runners up at the Presentation Evening on Fridy the 22nd October. Further details and a request for numbers will be sent to members shortly.
