Live band night a great success
Ridgeway's "Live band night" was a great success on Saturday night. A big crowd, who drank the bar day and ate all the food, enjoyed nearly five hours of live music from four different acts including a sensational re-appearnace of Elvis who, apparently, seems to have been alive and well all this time and living in Barnsley!
Staged on a brilliantly decked stage the evening was kicked off by Loose Change who played a mixture of classic rock numbers including Deep Purple's "Smoke on the water". It was then Elvis's turn and, in his trademark white jumpsuit, did a great set including many of his classics - Heartbreal Hotel, Return to sender, I just can't help believing, Suspicious minds, Viva Las Vegas, Burnin' Love and many more. He wasn't put off by the short shower of rain and got a great ovation.
Time for a beer and a burger before Andy Birk's played a lighter acoustic set. Supported by a couple of brothers and one or two more he sang a mixture of songs which included great versions of David Gray's "Babylon" and Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher than the rest". They finished with the country number "Rodeo man"
As darkness fell headliners Junkyard Dog cranked the sound up and played a great set - starting with Tears for Fears "Everbody wants to rule the world" and nearly an hour later finished with Prince's Purple rain. In between they played a real good mix - ZZ Top's "Give me all your loving", The Eagles "Take it easy", Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Chis Isaak's "Wicked game" amongst many others.
All I can say it is a pity so many tennis club members missed such a great night and thanks go to the organisers of this event which will surely be repeated. If it is, don't miss it.
