"A" team spoil Abbeydale's promotion party in great win

The men's "A" team acted as party poopers in their latest match as they spoilt Abbeydale "B" promotion celebrations by beating the champions by 5-4 in a great win at Ridgeway.

After losing all 6 champions tie-breaks in a defeat at Barnsley last week Ridgeway's fortunes were the exact opposite this week and 4 of the 5 rubbers were won on the deciding tie-break!  In their only other defeat of the season Abbeydale lost 3 rubbers on the long breakers.  With the scoring system Ridgeway won just 6 sets to the visitors 12.  

At the end of the first round of matches Ridgeway were 2-1 down.  Mick Mason and Liam Rudge lost to the firsts by 6-7. 4-6, Glyn Rudge and Nick Johnson beat the seconds by 6-1, 7-6 and Martyn Soar and James Haigh lost to the thirds by 4-6, 4-6. Ridgeway won the second round by 2-1 to make the match all square at 3-3.  Mick and Liam beat the seconds on the tie-break after sets of 3-6, 6-0, Glyn and Nick beat the thirds on a tie-break after sets of 2-6, 6-4 but Martyn and James lost to the firsts by 2-6, 0-6.  So, in the final round Ridgeway took two more tie-break victories to clinch the win.  First voctory was Mick and Liam's game against the thirds and a win ion the breaker after sets of 3-6, 6-1.  Now 4-3 up and just seconds later Martyn and James beat the seconds on the breaker after sets of 6-1, 3-6.  Almost immediately the final rubber concluded with the visitor's first couple beating Glyn and Nick - 3-6, 3-6.

Final matchg score - Rubbers 5-4, Sets 6-12, Games 97-86. 

The match concludes the summer 6 man league and the team should be congratulated on winning 5 of their 9 matches back in Division 4.  All the matches have been keenly contested and have provided some very close, exciting matches. The team have won 41 rubbers and lost 40, have won 85 sets and lost 77 and won 771 games and lost 752.  

 

Coaching
Ridgeway Tennis Club runs coaching for all juniors from the ages of 5 to 17. For the youngsters, there is a Mini Tennis program which runs on Thursdays from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. and for older juniors there are sessions on Monday evening. These do not run through the winter but will resume in Spring 2010.
